Free Suicide Prevention Education Programme from MHERC

Mental Health Education & Resource CentreImprove your knowledge and gain confidence when providing support and assistance for suicide prevention, intervention and postvention.

This FREE programme is a great opportunity for those who work in health, education or social service professions.

The 12-session programme will run from 10th July to 9th October 2017. All 4-hour sessions will be held at the Mental Health Education and Resource Centre (116 Marshland Road, Shirley).

This programme is facilitated by Annette Beautrais and is made up of 12 sessions - each covering two topics:

  1. 10th July (1 to 5pm): Introduction, Epidemiology, Definitions, and Statistics; and Suicide Theories
  2. 11th July (8.30am to 12.30pm): Risk and Protective Factors; and High Risk Groups - Youth
  3. 31st July (1 to 5pm): High Risk Groups - Older Adults; and Maori, Pasifika, Other Ethnicities
  4. 4th August (8.30am to 12.30pm): High Risk Groups - Rural people; and Gender Differences in Suicidal Behaviours
  5. 21st August (8.30am to 12.30pm): Non Suicidal Self Injuries (NSSI); and Suicide Clusters and Contagion
  6. 21st August (1 to 5pm):Comorbidity; and Public Health Approaches to Suicide Prevention
  7. 4th September (1 to 5pm): Emergency Departments and Suicide Prevention; and Suicide Risk Screening and Assessment
  8. 5th September (8.30am to 12.30pm): Safety Planning and Brief Interventions; and Ethical Considerations
  9. 25th September (1 to 5pm): Outpatient Treatments with Suicidal Individuals; and Postvention
  10. 26th September (8.30am to 12.30pm): Policy Implications and National Directives; and Multi-level (Systems) Approaches to Suicide Prevention
  11. 9th October (8.30am to 12.30pm): E-health initiatives; and Requested and/or Topical Issues
  12. 10th October (1 to 5pm): Interactive Summary
