Smart poles bring free Wi-Fi and security to Naval Point users

Visitors to Te Nukutai o Tapoa – Naval Point will benefit from a range of smart technologies being installed as part of a new Christchurch City Council trial.
Two Kōtuitui Smart Poles have been installed at the popular seaside recreational area. The poles are equipped with a range of features including a free Wi-Fi network, CCTV cameras, pedestrian counters, and speakers for public alerts.
Visitors to the area will be able to connect to the free Wi-Fi network as part of the trial.
The Kōtuitui smart poles and systems integration were designed, procured and constructed by Connetics.
Connetics Chief Executive John Thompson says they are proud of the role they played in this future communities project from conception to delivery.
“Smart cities design is an expertise Connetics has been developing for several years. It is exciting to be involved in the first project of its kind for Christchurch," says Mr Thompson.
Manager of the Council’s Smart Christchurch programme Michael Healy, says the two-year trial will help connect the local community, while gathering important insights for the Council to use for future planning.
“Using smart technology to understand how the area is being used can help us make informed decisions down the track,” says Mr Healy.
“The Kōtuitui Smart Poles also include CCTV cameras connected to the Police network for monitoring, helping to keep the area safe for all to enjoy.”
Community-owned fibre broadband provider Enable has partnered with the Council to include a free Wi-Fi network.
Enable Chief Executive Johnathan Eele says the company is pleased to build on the success of the Christchurch free Wi-Fi network launched in the central city in June 2022.
“This is another important step for promoting digital inclusion in our region and will benefit locals and visitors alike,” says Mr Eele.
“The free Wi-Fi will also be a great boost during March’s SailGP event.” The Kōtuitui Smart Poles are being installed as part of the Council’s project to develop Naval Point.
The trial has been launched in collaboration with Christchurch City Council, Connetics, Orion, Enable, and Christchurch City Holdings Limited’s Emerging Technology and Innovation Hub.
