Braided rivers are globally rare ecosystems that feature networks of ever-changing channels weaving between islands of gravels. New Zealand’s braided rivers are home to an extraordinary diversity of endemic birds, fish, invertebrates, and plants that have adapted to live in this challenging and dynamic environment. Having evolved to live here, they depend on braided rivers for their survival. However, they are under threat. Some are on the verge of extinction and may vanish forever if we cannot protect what remains.
There is also good news. Over the past several years, work has been done to enhance breeding habitats. While the population of some species has increased, others are still declining.
