Wastewater upgrades to begin on Buchanans Road
Christchurch City Council Newsline: 22nd October 2025
Christchurch City Council is asking people who travel on SH1 Carmen Road and Buchanans Road in Hornby to think about other routes while an important wastewater upgrade takes place.
Road users can expect delays of 30 to 60 minutes along this route and roads in the general area, due to work taking place in the intersection of Buchanans and SH1 Carmen Roads, from Sunday 26th October to Tuesday 4th November.
Head of Three Waters Gavin Hutchison says this section of pipe is very important to the wastewater infrastructure used by the growing community in southwest Christchurch.
“To help us do this safely, we need to reduce SH1 Carmen Road to one lane in each direction. Traffic can continue straight through, and we’ll maintain the ability to turn left only. There will be no right-turn available from SH1 Carmen Road into Buchanans Road. Southbound traffic will be able to turn left onto Buchanans Road and follow a single lane towards Racecourse Road.
“Westbound traffic will have no entry onto SH1 Carmen Road from Buchanans Road (as currently established due to the works on Buchanans Road). We recommend using Waterloo Road to access SH1 Carmen Road.”
Mr Hutchison is advising road users to follow the suggested routes posted on SH1 Johns Road and SH1 Main South Road to bypass the area where possible.
“There will be no change to bus services with westbound services continuing their current temporary diversion and eastbound buses maintaining their usual route. We’re temporarily relocating the Buchanans Road bus stop, which is normally between Carmen Road and Dumfries Place, to the other side of Dumfries Place.”
“The Seipp Construction team will be working around the clock to try and get the disruption over as quickly as possible. We thank everyone for their patience while we undertake this important infrastructure upgrade.”
