Beat the heat with your pooch

Pet owners are being reminded to take the heat off their animals over the warmer months.
Christchurch City Council Acting Animal Services Manager Ivan Trethowen says there’s many things to consider to ensure your pet is safe and comfortable as we head towards the summer period.
“Kennels or cars in direct sun light can get incredibly hot and can lead to death in some cases.
“If you’re heading out to do some early Christmas shopping, leave your pooch at home in a cool area, as open car windows and air conditioning often aren’t enough.”
Mr Trethowen says even on cloudy summer days, it’s important to have a completely shaded area outside for your dog to relax during the day.
“Try and take your pup for a walk early in the day or later in the evening to avoid the hottest part of the day. This also means you can steer clear of hot pavements that might burn their paws.
“Pets will need plenty of water during warmer days, especially if they’re outside in the heat and keeping active.”
Water bowls or bottles should be taken when going for exercise on a hot day.
“A great way to cool your pooch down is to take them for a dip at the beach or set up a small paddling pool in your backyard,” Mr Trethowen says.
Regular grooming also helps to keep your pet cool and is especially important for dogs with thicker coats.
“It’s essential for pet owners to be alert and keep an eye on their animals to look for signs of dehydration or heat stroke.
“Excessive panting is often the first sign your dog needs to be cooled down quickly.”
Ways to cool your pet down include draping a wet towel over them, sitting them in the shade, under air conditioning or a fan, and making sure they drink water.
“Prioritise your pets over the warmer months and make sure they’re happy, safe and comfortable,” Mr Trethowen says.
