Safety upgrades begin for key rural intersections

Selwyn District Council media release: 10th September 2025

The Council has confirmed the next stage of its rural road safety programme, with upgrades set to begin at high-risk intersections across the district, and a reminder to the community to drive with care.

A total of $1.2 million has been allocated through the Long-Term Plan to improve safety at rural intersections over the next three years. The programme focuses on delivering low-cost, high-impact safety treatments to reduce risk and improve outcomes for all road users.

This investment is part of a 33 percent increase in road maintenance funding in the first three years of the Long-Term Plan,

The Council’s Executive Director Infrastructure and Property Tim Mason says this work reflects the Council’s commitment to building lasting infrastructure with a focus on the safety of all road users in Waikirikiri Selwyn.

Work will begin tomorrow (Thursday 11th September) at the Shands Road / Weedons Road / Springston Rolleston Road intersection, where increased traffic volumes have led to more risky driving behaviour, including drivers failing to stop at the stop sign. The upgrades will introduce additional safety signage at all entrances to the intersection to encourage safer driving and protect all road users.

“It is also a great reminder to our community that we all have a part to play in making our intersections safer.

“Intersections are one of the most common locations for crashes in the Selwyn District. Poor observation, judgement and failure to stop or give way are the top contributing factors.”

“Always take another look at intersections. If you can’t see, then wait.”

Further upgrades are planned for the Waterholes Road / Robinsons Road / Larcombs Road intersection. In addition, the Council is working to finalise upgrades at other intersections across the district. These will include a mix of:

  • Additional “Stop Ahead” signs.
  • Red “Stop” and “Stop Ahead” boxes painted on approach roads.
  • “High Crash Area” and other warning signage on main through roads.

More intersections will be confirmed once these initial upgrades are complete.

Intersection safety tips

  1. Always stop at STOP signs – even if the road looks clear.
  2. Look in all directions before moving – ahead, behind, and both sides.
  3. Slow down at GIVE WAY signs – check carefully and only go when safe.
  4. Watch traffic speed. Rural roads often have higher speed limits.
  5. Never pass near intersections as it’s dangerous and often illegal.
  6. Know the give way rules – for both controlled and uncontrolled intersections.
  7. Indicate early to let other drivers and pedestrians know your plans.
  8. Position your vehicle carefully. Don’t block others’ view.
  9. Don’t park within 6 metres of an intersection as it reduces visibility.
  10. Take a second look. If you’re unsure or can’t see clearly, wait.
