Mitre 10 Sparks returns to fill the skies with music at North Hagley Park this summer
Christchurch City Council Newsline: 27th October 2026
Presented by the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (CSO) in collaboration with Christchurch City Council.
Sparks is an evergreen favourite on the summer events calendar as thousands flock to North Hagley Park to enjoy a mix of traditional masterpieces and modern-day hits.
With Tom Rainey in the conductor’s box the free, open air event takes place on Saturday 13th February 2027.
“This year’s theme is ‘The Screen’ and the name says it all. While the program is still under wraps, it will feature music from some of our most loved television shows, and legendary movies from the past and present,” says Council Arts and Events Manager Lucy Blackmore.
“Now in its 44th year this free event continues to grow in popularity with more than 20,000 people attending last year’s Valentine’s-Day themed extravaganza. Along with the marvellous CSO and special guests, audiences always give us feedback about how they loved the fireworks performance choreographed to music. It truly is a spectacular ending that will send shivers down your spine!” says Ms Blackmore.
“People can bring their own food and drink and of course blankets and chairs are welcome. We’ll also have an exciting range of food and drink offerings on site.”
The main show runs from 7.30pm when the CSO take the stage and the fireworks display concludes the evening at 9.40pm. Entry opens at 5.30pm with live music on stage from 6.30pm.
For those being dropped off at the park, there will be a drop-off point on Park Terrace between Kilmore Street and Armagh Street.
Bike stands for cyclists are available in the park outside the event and site mobility parking is available on Chester Street West.
