Questions about consenting? Get clear answers and plan ahead
Maybe you have a resource consent in Canterbury already, or are considering something new that requires resource consent, or perhaps you need to reapply for a new one soon. Now’s the time to start planning.
Our drop-in sessions across Waitaha Canterbury give you the opportunity to ask questions on resource management and consenting requirements in particular. There is no charge for this service, and we aim to provide advice that may help with your future plans.
Come along with questions like:
- What can I do without resource consent?
- Has my existing consent been extended and if so, to when?
- Will I need a new Farming Land Use consent when my current one expires?
- If I need a consent, how long will the process take and how much is it likely to cost me?
You raise any other consent-related questions you may have.

What’s changing with resource management laws?
In December last year, the government passed The Resource Management (Duration of Consents) Amendment Bill under urgency, automatically extending the duration of most consents due to expire by the end of 2027 for two years.

Replacements for the Resource Management Act, The Planning Bill and the Natural Environment Bill received Royal assent on 30 September and are now law. Many of the changes will be implemented over time and some of the practical impacts are still being worked through. Nevertheless, Canterbury's Regional Council continues to be responsible for ensuring environmental regulations are followed through this period of change.
