Construction to start on next stage of Kaiapoi "Shovel Ready" project
Waimakariri District Council media release: 7th March 2022
The Kaiapoi Stormwater and Flooding Improvements project continues to progress, with the first major stage of construction well underway on Otaki Street, Porters Place, Chapman Place and Ashley Place.
Construction will start soon on the second major stage of the project. The works involve installation of an underground stormwater pumping station on the south side of Beach Road in the paddock east of Feldwick Drain, along with the installation of a large diameter underground stormwater pipeline along the eastern side of Feldwick Drain from the pump station to the Kaiapoi River. Parallel to the pipeline will be a low grassed earth bund designed to prevent floodwaters from McIntosh Drain flowing into the township.

Construction is planned to start in April/May 2022 and will take approximately six months to complete. The first thing you will see in March will be the large diameter pipes being delivered to the site in preparation for main works commencing. Residents backing onto Feldwick Drain will be contacted prior to the start of construction once the contractor is confirmed.
Access to the land each side of Feldwick Drain will be from Beach Road (for the pumping station) and from Ashkeaton Drive (for the pipeline). Feldwick Drive will not be used to access the site by heavy machinery.
This is a major upgrade to the Kaiapoi Stormwater System and we appreciate there will be some disruption while the works are under construction and our contractor will work to keep it to a minimum. This project will make a significant improvement including better protection for houses and property, increase the resilience of the stormwater network across Kaiapoi and reduce the likelihood of flooding in big storm events.
Thank you for your patience and continued support.
This project is being jointly funded by Council and the Government through its Shovel Ready Project fund.
