Inaugural Professorial Lecture: Understanding motivation to be physically active
Hear from Professor Elaine Hargreaves about her research investigating the affective and motivational forces that underpin the decision to be physically active. Elaine’s work has established that feeling good while exercising, having autonomy over decisions, and a sense of confidence and connection with others are central to sustained engagement in physical activity.
Some of her more rewarding research has been in translating this evidence into community-based interventions, which resulted in meaningful improvements in lifestyle behaviours and health outcomes among adult populations. Elaine’s research has implications for those who prescribe exercise for health and fitness and for the design of effective health promotion programmes.
In this lecture, she hopes you reflect on, and appreciate, the complexity that surrounds decisions to be physically active, while feeling inspired and motivated to move more.
Date: Wednesday 4th March 2026.
Time: 5.30 to 6.30pm.
Location: Online.
