Selwyn Aquatic Centre to close for maintenance
Selwyn District Council media release: 9th March 2026
Selwyn Aquatic Centre will be closed for maintenance from Saturday 4th to Sunday 19th April - throughout the school holiday period. This will be a full facility closure, as contractors will be working across the site to complete a wide range of renewals and repairs.
Closing the entire centre is necessary to keep everyone safe while work is underway and the maintenance programme is an important investment in the future of the facility. These works are designed to keep the building fit, healthy, and able to operate for longer, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all users.
“We’re really happy to host over 500,000 visits from the community each year but this does mean we occasionally need to pause to complete essential work,” Head of Sport and Recreation, James Richmond says.
Maintenance will take place throughout the facility, including pool infrastructure repairs, mechanical and plant system servicing, specialist pool maintenance, and maintenance on building amenities such as changing rooms, seating, lockers, and drinking fountains. Additional work will also address ventilation systems, high-level cleaning, and the removal of outdated equipment.
The decision to close during the school holidays was made with careful consideration.
“We are fully booked during term times delivering swimming lessons and water safety programmes, to all areas of the community, including child/parent, preschool, after school, and school sessions. The holiday period in April is a more convenient time to close the facility.”
There are still plenty of ways to stay active. The Selwyn Sports Centre will remain available with fitness classes and recreation activities for all ages, and residents are encouraged to explore the What’s On Autumn guide for events and activities happening across the district.
All memberships will be placed on hold during the closure period.
