Akaroa introduces new water pressure zone
Christchurch City Council Newsline: 21st April 2026
A water pressure management zone has been introduced in Akaroa that will help lessen the number of leaks and burst pipes in the town.
The new zone will see up to 222 properties being supplied with reduced water pressure, with the project part of a wider pressure management programme being carried out across Christchurch and Banks Peninsula.
Head of Three Waters Gavin Hutchison says many Akaroa properties are supplied with water at an extremely high pressure due to the topology or land features of the township.
“High water pressure can put more stress on pipes, causing leaks and them to burst. We expect the pressure reduction to help combat these issues and improve the asset life of the pipes.
“It should also help with the overall consumption of water in Akaroa, which often has water restrictions in summer when the network is busier.”
Pressure reduction is achieved by using pressure reducing valves and isolating parts of the network. The needed infrastructure was installed as part of water supply renewal work carried out in Akaroa last year and it is now time to commission the zone and get it working.
Mr Hutchison says the change in water pressure should not be overly noticeable to residents.
“The water supply pressure delivered to residents will still remain higher than the minimum design guide followed by the Council.”
Fire hydrant testing will be carried out to ensure necessary flows are maintained for emergency services.
There is the potential that additional infrastructure could be introduced in Akaroa to lower the pressure of water supplied to 143 more properties.
