Deadline fast approaching for self-contained vehicles requirements
Christchurch City Council Newsline: 3rd June 2026
Freedom campers with self-contained vehicles are reminded that the deadline is fast approaching for changes to self-containment requirements.
Christchurch and Banks Peninsula have many amazing spots for freedom camping. But the rules for self-contained vehicles are changing, so make sure you don’t get caught out.
National requirements for self-contained vehicles come into full effect after Sunday 7th June 2026 – which have been under a transition period for several years.
Read the legislation requirements for self-contained vehicles (NZ Government).
From that day, all vehicles used for freedom camping in New Zealand must have a certificate of self-containment and display a green warrant card in the front windscreen.
The new requirements mean freedom camping will only be allowed in certified vehicles that have a permanently fixed toilet and meet requirements relating to water supply, wastewater, ventilation and rubbish storage.
If your vehicle is not certified as self-contained, you cannot freedom camp on Council land and can be fined if you do. Instead, you should stay in a camping ground that has facilities you can use.
General Manager for Planning, Strategy and Regulatory John Higgins said it is important everyone can enjoy the district, protect the environment and play by the same rules.
“We’re bringing attention to this as owners of self-contained vehicles have now had over two years to make these changes and ensure their vehicles have all the equipment needed to be properly self-contained. As of next week, the requirements come into full effect.
“Fines relating to self-contained vehicles range from $200 to $600. It’s not worth risking it, so please make sure your vehicle is up to standard if you plan on freedom camping,” he said.
“Remember too that there are some places in Christchurch and Banks Peninsula where freedom camping is not allowed, or where restrictions apply. Check out the map on our website that shows where you can and can’t freedom camp, as well as camping grounds, dump stations, rubbish and recycling facilities, and public toilet locations.”
