Under One Sky: Matariki Across Culture
In a timely reminder that more unites than divides, the University of Canterbury (UC) presents a panel discussion on Matariki across cultures. This discussion will feature Professor Te Maire Tau, Ūpoko of Ngāi Tūāhuriri and one of the country's leading tribal historians, and other UC experts.
Date: Tuesday 7th July 2026.
Time: 7 to 8pm.
Location: Great Hall at Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre.
Cost: FREE but registration is required.
Matariki - the rising of the Pleiades star cluster - alongside Puanga (Rigel), holds deep significance for Māori communities across Aotearoa. This cluster’s importance extends far beyond Aotearoa with diverse cultures turning to the same stars for timekeeping, navigation, storytelling, and identity.
