New suicide-related resources for workplaces
The Mental Health Foundation recently blessed their two new suicide prevention and postvention resources - specifically designed to support workplaces in Aotearoa New Zealand.
They have been developed to offer targeted, evidence-based guidance for people leaders and those people who support staff within a workplace (such as human resources professionals, counsellors and workplace wellbeing and health and safety teams).
A guide for workplaces: Supporting your staff and organisation after a suspected suicide
Suicide is a complex issue with many contributing factors. Within a workplace, a death by suspected suicide can affect both internal workplace connections and external work contacts (such as clients and business networks of the person who died).
This resource offers practical ways to support people affected after a suspected suicide and provides a path towards healing and hope.
It has been developed alongside people with lived experience of suicide in the workplace, and clinical specialists. Its steps provide clear guidance on the immediate actions that need to be taken to support people in your workplace in the days, weeks, months and years that follow.

A guide for workplaces: Responding to a staff member’s suicidality
A person experiencing suicidality or suicidal distress needs support. This support could be from the people who know them best (such as their whānau, close friends or trusted colleagues) or from a health professional.
‘Suicidality’ is a term used to refer to thoughts, feelings and actions related to suicide. It includes a range of experiences, from occasionally thinking about wanting to die to plans for ending your life. Suicidality also includes suicide attempts.
This resource offers guidance and advice for people leaders in workplaces across Aotearoa New Zealand to help them care for a staff member experiencing suicidality, including after a suicide attempt.
