Why can’t I fix my washing machine?
When a washing machine fails, dirty laundry piles up while owners wait weeks for an authorised repairer. Even simple faults can become expensive repairs once call-out fees and labour charges are added.
So why is repair support so difficult to access?
Repair Network Aotearoa investigated ten popular washing machine brands in New Zealand, and grading each manufacturer on whether owners can access repair manuals and purchase spare parts. Then they repeated the investigation in the UK using the same manufacturers and the results were dramatically different!

Unlocking value from textile product stewardship
Textile waste is one of the fastest-growing waste streams in Aotearoa New Zealand. Today, around 107,000 tonnes of textiles are sent to landfill each year, representing 78 percent of all textiles consumed. We have a largely linear system where materials that still hold value are often used briefly and then discarded.
This webinar will share key findings from a Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA) undertaken by Eunomia Research & Consulting and commissioned by the Textile Advisory Group (TAG), with funding support from the Clare Foundation. The research explores the potential impacts of implementing a regulated product stewardship scheme for textiles in Aotearoa New Zealand.

We don't have an e-waste data problem. We have an incentive problem
You've probably seen the numbers: 100,000 tonnes of e-waste a year, 20kg per person, 2 percent recycled – repeated everywhere from media to government reports. Look closer though, and they don't hold up. But chasing better data misses the real story.
Previous research found retailers refunding and landfilling returned appliances as it is cheaper and easier to bin than repair and resell. It's the same for households. Landfill’s true cost is low and hidden and that's the pattern underneath it all. Throwing things away is easy and nothing currently incentivises repair, resale, or reuse.
