Disability events added to What’s On
Christchurch City Council Newsline: 18th May 2026
One of Christchurch’s favourite events webpages is making it easier to find out what disability events are happening in the city.
What’s On Christchurch has added a new disability events programme tile under the “what” drop down, where organisations can list information for the community. The What’s On platform is a guide to help residents and visitors find out about events, activities and programmes happening in Ōtautahi-Christchurch.
Head of Recreation, Sport and Events Nigel Cox says the Council is pleased to utilise the existing What’s On page to promote events for disabled people.
“The disability community have been asking for a one-stop-shop to find events, programmes and activities that are specifically for them. There has been a team from different community organisations who have been looking at solving this problem.
“Instead of having to go to a variety of different sites, we are concentrating them all in one place – What’s On Disability within What’s On Christchurch.”
Disability events foster connection, accessibility and participation, which is vital with one in four New Zealanders identifying as disabled in some way.
Aspire Canterbury Chief Executive Chris Davis helped spearhead the change, and says this is an exciting development.
“This is something disabled people and their families have been directly asking for. It has the potential to be a fantastic asset for parents with disabled children, adults with disabilities and for staff working for organisations in the disability sector. People are often looking for disability specific activities or things to do, and this is a one-stop shop to get the information they need.
“We want the sector to know that this tool exists and support it. Aspire Canterbury has started listing events and is already getting feedback from the community that they have seen the information on What’s On Disability.”
Event organisers can create a log-in and list their own events on What’s On to highlight the diverse cultural, artistic and cultural opportunities available in the city.
